Mt. Whitney (14,508 ft)

Published:  06/29/2023

Trail Report: A summer solstice summit of Mt. Whitney, the highest peak in the contiguous 48 states, at 14,508 ft. This season's record snowpack (most snow on the ground since 1951) meant the traditional summit route (aka the "99 switchbacks") was not an option. The 1,700 ft climb from Trail Camp, 12,000 ft to 13,700 ft in elevation, had to be covered by climbing the 40 degree snow chute just past the snow covered 99 switchbacks. Lucked out on weather for this trip, it could not have been better.
